Shockwave Therapy
What is Shockwave Therapy and How is it Used in Chiropractic Care?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses sound waves to promote deeper healing in various musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, connective tissue and soft tissue injuries. It is an additional treatment we use at Aret Chiropractic in the clinical setting which we have found improves clinical outcome.

You Ask, We Answer
How does shockwave therapy relieve pain and reduce inflammation?
Shockwave therapy works by reducing pain and inflammation as it stimulates blood circulation, promotes cell regeneration, breaks down calcified deposits and activates the body’s natural healing process.
What conditions or injuries typically benefit from shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is commonly used for treating tendon, joint and soft tissue injuries like rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, chronic knee pain, jumpers knee, Achilles tendon pain, plantar fasciitis, ankle ligament injuries, chronic lower back pain and tennis elbow to name a few.
What should I expect during an shockwave therapy session?
We typically utilise shockwave as an additional therapy to our hands on soft tissue therapy, dry needling, mobilisation, manipulation and rehabilitation to help improve clinical outcome. Shockwave therapy complements hands on treatment.
How does shockwave therapy complement chiropractic treatment?
The most common side effect being temporary soreness at the site of treatment for 24-48 hours. If pain persists or is too intense during the treatment then treatment will cease. Contraindications include but are not restricted to pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, cancers, infections, pacemakers, immature growth plates (younger population), lung tissue near treatment site and severe peripheral vascular disease cases.
Are there any side effects or contraindications associated with shockwave therapy?
Typically we see between 3-6 treatments provide a good clinical outcome. However if the case is chronic, it may require a few more sessions.
How many shockwave therapy sessions are usually needed before noticeable improvement is seen?
Any patient suffering from pain that is not responding to traditional manual therapy and is not contraindicated for shockwave therapy.
Can shockwave therapy help reduce reliance on pain medication?
Yes it can. It can be relied upon instead of pain medication.
What clinical evidence supports the use of shockwave therapy in the clinical setting?
There is strong evidence the use of shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, rotator cuff injuries and knee osteoarthritis. There is also favourable evidence for lateral epicondylopathy (tennis elbow), patella tendinopathy(jumpers knee), hamstring tendinopathy, trochanteric and subacromial bursitis and chronic lower back pain.
How much does shockwave therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?
There is an additional charge of $35-40 on top of the consultation fee. Yes it will be covered by health insurance.
